Wool Colour Sewing

My raw material is made by felting 'previously loved' woolen material, clothes and blankets in a washing machine. Sometimes I dye the felted material to a more inspiring colour.

My process isn't backed up by a hard-core eco philosophy, I instictively dislike throwing stuff away and I love the process of finding an unexpected use for something discarded. Upcycling, giving materials a new life by turning them into something new, is a positive choice. Like preferring old houses or second-hand clothes and furniture, constructing a collage out of all the life and history contained in a material is a creative inspiration as well as a practical way of home-based designing and making

I use a hand stitched line to construct raw-edge appliqued images. The image is sometimes defined with additional embroidery. In more recent work the embroidered stich merges with minute appliqued fabric making a very dense surface.

Hand stitched construction makes a rich textile surface, enhancing the texture, colour and depth of the wool. Although as a production method it's really slow, it's become an integral part of my design process. It allows me time to get to know a particular piece of felted wool, which can feed ideas for the next object or surface design.
